thailand,. bangkok

I remember being really nervous and excited about the idea of a 30 day trip to Thailand.  The more I thought about it the more convinced I became that this trip was a great idea. I decided to check the flight prices. When I saw that it was under $600, I knew that this was an opportunity I couldn’t miss, so I purchased my ticket. That was that.. I dusted off my 16 year old backpack and it was on! I went and it was such a euphoric experience. I was surrounded by beauty everywhere I went. I visited Bangkok, Phi Phi, Phuket, Krabi Town, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Chiang Mai, Pai and more.  It was amazing. I’m always a little scared to travel to a country without a plan or accommodations in place, but in the end it always works out and I come back home without any regrets. I do wish that someone had advised on the following:

  1.  Leave the 20, 10, 5 and 1 dollar bills home.  Instead bring new or lightly used $50 and $100 bills to convert into bahts. You get more bahts for every dollar doing it this way.  The bills must be in very good condition. They will not accept a ripped or marked up bill.
  2. download the app “Grab”  it’s a taxi service similar to Uber and you just never know if you will need it.
  3. Be aware when you visit temples. tuk tuk drivers hang out in the area.  They may tell you that the temple is closed for a little while, or tickets are sold out or that you will not be allowed in due to your outfit.  They will offer to take you to other temples and stores to shop for a low price. Why? well if you buy things, they get a cut out of it. So my advice is to say “ok I’ll be back, Thanks!” Walk away and resume to your destination.
